Our First Senior's Open House!
On November 24, 2011, we held our first ever Senior's Open House and it was a great success! We held a presentation on Fall Prevention, a program designed for seniors to help prevent falls, adopt preventative measures and adapt their homes to better suit their needs, followed by a catered lunch by the Aylmer Food Bank. We finished the afternoon with a group drumming circle, led by volunteer Krish Sundaram. We will be holding another Senior's Open House in March 2012. Check back here for updates, or take a look at our calendar.
Affordable Housing for Seniors
Les Résidences du Bel-Âge is now accepting applications for an affordable housing project for seniors in the Buckingham region (Vallée-de-la-Lièvre). This 60-unit housing project will be located in the Bowman development off Lepine Street in the eastern section of Buckingham and is divided into the following two components:
Component 1 will serve seniors who are 55 years of age and over who are self-sufficient. 24 apartments will be available for residency: 16 will be 1-bedroom and 8 will be 2-bedroom.
Component 2 will primarily serve those seniors who are 75 years of age and over who are semi-autonomous; that is, individuals who need some assistance. Also eligible are those under 75 who have certain chronic living conditions that limit their independence. This component will consist of 36 units: 27 will be 1-bedroom, and 9 will be 2-bedroom, and will include elevators. Residents will be required to purchase 5 meals per week at an estimated cost of $7.00 per meal.
Construction is expected to commence in April 2011, and occupancy is planned for March 2012. Rental costs for a 1-bedroom will be $585.00, while a 2-bedroom unit will cost $685.00. Rents exclude heating and electricity.
The Papineau Health and Social Services Net work (PHSSN) is coordinating information for Les Résidences du Bel-Âge for the English-speaking population. Please call 819-986-8901 for further information and/or application forms. As only 60 units will be available, it is important to act quickly in order to gain possible admittance.
