As Canadians, we are definitely use to the cold.
But in times of extreme cold, it is easy to forget ways in which to protect ourselves and our families. Exposure to cold can be hazardous to our health, and even life threatening. Frostbite is a medical condition where damage is caused to skin and other tissues due to the cold. Here are Environment Canada's seven tips on preventing frosbite. 1. Listen to the weather forecast. Listen for wind-child warnings, the temperature and any other warnings. 2. Plan Ahead. Develop a plan that you can implement when extreme cold is projected for the day. 3. Dress Warmly. Dress in layers. Remember to wear warm boots, mittens and hats. Your hands and feet are the most susceptible to cold. 4. Seek Shelter. If the wind child is very high, try staying inside or limiting your time outside. 5. Stay Dry. Wet clothing chills the body much faster. 6. Keep Active. 7. Be Aware. Watch for signs of frostnip and frostbite. Remember that certain groups are more prone to these conditions, such as the elderly and children. For more information, click here. |
